Visit Samana: Volunteer
Interested in working with us on the Samana Mission project? After careful consideration, inquiry, and, most importantly, prayer on your part, we look forward to hearing from you and warmly extending our invitation to join us here in the Dominican Republic.
While the Samana Mission is open especially to young people, all of God's children are warmly welcomed. If you have a burden in your heart to do the Lord's work and have been lead by God to visit the D.R., you are welcomed. This property belongs to God and not us, we've only been blessed with its stewardship.
To help you in your consideration, here are some basic ideas of the types of volunteers and projects we have available:
Short Term Volunteers - 2 weeks to 1 month stay - During your stay, you'd be involved with any number of ongoing projects here in the Samana Mission. As your time is limited, we'd seek to give you a taste of as much of the work as possible. As the Lord provides opportunity, you may be able to return again someday.
Mid Term Volunteers - 2-5 month stay - During your stay, as you've been blessed with more time, you'd be able to focus more intently on specific projects and watch as they grow and bear fruit. Whether involved with local church ministries, the sanitarium work, the internet ministries, etc, you would have a solid opportunity to put your best into the work and watch as God produces the results.
Our current needs for mid-term volunteers:
- Construction Workers - Aiding in local construction projects - Willingness to be creative and resourceful a necessity : ).
- Gardeners and Landscapers - We are building extensive tropical gardens through the property as well as fruit and vegetable gardens. Lots of help will be needed.
Long Term Volunteers - 6 months and longer - If it be according to the Lord's will, you are welcome to make Samana your home and become a permanent (or even semi-permanent) part of the work here in the ministry. There is definitely a need for such dedication and if this be God's call for you we warmly welcome you into our family.
Our current needs for long-term volunteers:
- Medical Missionaries - Working locally in the Sanitarium, teaching classes on health both locally and abroad, possibly working in smaller outpost centers in the city.
- Head Gardener - Teaching classes on agriculture and managing the orchards, gardens, and arbors of the Samana Mission complex, etc.
- Food Manager - Teaching classes on nutrition and food preparation, overseeing and helping with meals for campaments, etc., working with our local restaraunt(s).
- Lay Workers - Working with the establishment of a children’s and adult branch Sabbath school.
Types of Projects
First of all, no matter what your perceived talents and abilities, even if you feel you have none, all are welcomed. The sole requirement is that God be put first, and last, and best in everything. No matter how small you may perceive your abilities, if you're willing to put God first He will work wondrously through you. The same goes for those who've been greatly blessed in ability. If you'll submit humbly to the Lord, recognizing that all of our gifts come directly from Him, He'll use you in His service to bring in a great harvest.
That said, if you don't know what you'd do here, and none of the projects below seem to match what you have in mind, don't dispair. If you hear God's call to come to the D.R., trust that He'll provide a work just for you.
Construction - Workers willing to be resourceful and creative as we work to set a high quality example for the locals.
Agriculture - With hundreds of fruit trees, flowers, vegetable and herb gardens we welcome anyone with a desire to work among God's creation to learn and teach the very best methods.
Youth Ministry - There is a great work to be done among the young people here in the D.R. Speaking Spanish is a huge plus.
Church Ministry – Lay preaching and teaching and preparation of written program material. Sabbath afternoon bible studies in Spanish.
Internet Ministry - The harvest field of the Internet is ripe and the laborers are few. We're looking for young people with talent and ability and, above all, the desire to learn and put their best into their work that God would be honored and glorified.
Living Conditions
Though clean, efficient, and naturally beautiful, our living conditions are humble. We're blessed with a wonderful gravity-fed water system and while "off the grid", we have a generator that produces electricity to run lights in the mornings, our computers, etc. For anyone willing to live a bit differently from life in the USA, there won't be any problem and many will find that the peace and quiet offered by a simple lifestyle is greatly preferred. We invite you to come and see for yourself.
Living Expenses
Your greatest expense will be your plane ticket to and from the D.R. With our God-blessed abundance of simple foods and style of living, our expenses are kept to a minimum. Whether supported by a church or on your own, all are welcome and as God opens the doors we'll do our very best to make sure no one is turned away.
